Columbus Day was a school holiday for Mia, so we headed up to visit my parents in Pigeon Forge. Most of you know that my dad has been a seasonal Park Ranger at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, so they've been enjoying the east Tennessee weather all summer. Mia had been up to visit them at the R.V. a few times over the last months, but this was my first trip to see them.

We got to Tennessee late Saturday night. First thing Sunday morning, we headed to Dad's 'office' for a hike.
We did the Laurel Falls Trail hike. It's about 2.6 miles round trip and leads to - you guessed it - Laurel Falls. This is one of Ranger Sam's regular guided hikes, where he takes visitors up to a stand of virgin, old-growth forest above the falls and talks about the history and ecology of the area along the way. We had him to ourselves and learned a lot along the trail.....
